Founded in 1991, American Biophysics is a science-based company that has been studying mosquitoes for over 12 years. After manufacturing surveillance traps used by state and federal mosquito control agencies to monitor mosquito-borne diseases for several years, they developed the Mosquito Magnet®, the first carbon dioxide-based consumer mosquito trap of its kind.

Originally, American Biophysics designed and manufactured a variety of specially engineered mosquito traps used for surveillance by entomologists, state departments of environmental management, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). It didn't take long, however, for the company to later identify a need for a commercial application and worked toward adapting its technology for the consumer market.

In 1998, American Biophysics was first-to-market with a consumer-based application for its patented Mosquito Magnet Advanced Mosquito Defense Systems, which catalytically convert propane gas into CO2 (a powerful attractant for mosquitoes and biting insects), and combine it with heat and moisture. It proved to be a combination irresistible to female biting insects.

The U.S. Coast Guard used the Mosquito Magnet ® traps during the summer of 1999 to reclaim its Bahamian station that had become uninhabitable due to swarming mosquitoes. The Journal of the American Mosquito Control Association (Volume 17, #3) concluded in its September 2001 edition that the Mosquito Magnet ® system captured "significantly greater numbers of mosquitoes" than the other commercially available traps tested. In May 2003, the Mosquito Magnet ® trap was rated "top choice" for efficiency and ease-of-use by America 's leading consumer testing magazine.

Mosquito Magnet ® is currently used by national parks, zoos, universities, resorts, golf courses, restaurants, bird sanctuaries, townships, municipalities, the U.S. Military, and hundreds of thousands of homeowners. The patented Mosquito Magnet ® traps are powered solely by a standard 20-lb. propane tank or a combination of propane and electricity supplied through a low voltage power cord. The traps are all odorless, silent, user-friendly and operate as a true “ mosquito magnet ” 24-hours a day. The traps' proven technology ensures noticeable results within seven to ten days against female biting insect populations. By operating the machine 24-hours a day for a 4-6-week period, the trap effectively interrupts the insects' breeding cycles to virtually eliminate them from a defined area. Environmentally beneficial insects, such as moths, beetles, butterflies, and ladybugs are not attracted and therefore not affected.
